PJ TODAY was joined by CLEO editor Gemma Crisp with three of the finalists of the CLEO bachelor of the year award - including PJ!
Grazia TV crashed the CLEO Bachelor of the Year launch at The Beresford Hotel in Sydney to grill the top 50 finalists on their plans for taking out the title for 2011.
''It's not like it used to be. Dad used to play a Vegas show room and he used to have to
really entertain. A guy might have lost 10 grand on roulette and as a consolation he's been
given a couple of Don Lane tickets. You have to work damn hard to get that guy to smile,''
says Don's son, P.J. Lane, 26.
Named today as one of Cleo magazine's Bachelors of the Year, Lane has followed his
father into showbiz, but as a boy he had a different dream. ''Dad had to push me into
piano and drama lessons and all I wanted to do was be a professional basketballer.''
Chasing that dream, P.J. did his last two years of high school in Los Angeles before taking
a college scholarship in Connecticut and playing professionally in Greece. After dementia
started to affect his dad, he chose chose to come home.
''When I came back, I thought it was time to do what I was pushed into, so I told dad I was quitting basketball and going into show business. I didn't do it reluctantly, I just knew I wanted to.'' Now Lane is what you might call a variety performer. He acts - he was on Neighbours and has a feature film coming out this year - and presents, regularly appearing on Sydney Weekender, and fronts an eight-piece swing band. ''I call it rock swing, which no one else is doing in Australia. We do swing arrangements of new stuff … songs by Lady Gaga, Ke$ha and John Farnham, and also classics like Can't Take My Eyes Off of You.
''We always have fun with it though, you know? I'll do Barry Manilow’s Mandy and find a woman whose name sounds like Mandy and sing her name, but first you'll find someone like a Shirley and tell her that won't work. You've got to keep things funny.'' Sound like anyone we know?

A CHIROPRACTOR, an industrial designer, a lifesaver and a chef are among those hoping to be announced among the Top 50 finalists for Cleo Bachelor of the Year tomorrow.
Home and Away's Dan Ewing made the mix, as did DJ Chris Stafford and entertainer PJ Lane, son of the late Don Lane.
"I don't know if people are sick of the whole fame-game thing. Obviously, we've still got high-profile guys in there, but we get the sense that people want to see a real man win," Cleo editor Gemma Crisp says.
"Women just want someone who is going to treat them well reflected in the list."
